Whether a vehicle was started after the wrong fuel went in changes what needs to happen on-site, but not whether we can fix it. If the engine wasn’t started, we focus entirely on the fuel system. If it was started, we also flush and re-prime additional fuel lines and filters, then run a full start-up check including injector pressure and rev range before we consider the job complete. Not sure whether your vehicle was started? Call 1300 692 469 and we’ll talk you through what to check.
Most people assume “wrong fuel” is one job with one process. It isn’t. The single biggest factor in how we approach a rescue is whether the engine was started after the wrong fuel went in, and that’s not about ticking a box, it’s a genuine technical fork in the job.
If the vehicle wasn’t started, the wrong fuel is sitting in the tank and hasn’t reached the engine. We can remove it and move on. If the vehicle was started, even briefly, wrong fuel has been drawn through the lines, filters and injectors, so we need to clean out and flush those components too, then re-prime the system and run diagnostics before we hand the car back.
Ford Ranger Wrong Fuel, Seabrook — Not Started

This Ranger had petrol added to a diesel tank and the driver caught it before starting the engine. Because nothing had circulated past the tank, we were able to complete the recovery without touching the engine bay at all. We still check computer diagnostics to confirm engine operation before we finish, but there’s no line flushing or re-priming needed. Jobs like this typically run at our standard rate from $450.
Toyota LandCruiser Wrong Fuel, Wandin North — Started
This LandCruiser had petrol added to a diesel tank and the engine had been started before we arrived. Once fuel has circulated, we clean out all fuel lines and filters, not just the tank, then re-prime the system and run a start test that checks injector pressure and rev range before we’re satisfied the vehicle is right. In practice this only adds around 5 to 10 minutes on-site compared to a job where the engine wasn’t started, most of that in the re-priming and start-up check rather than the cleaning itself. Whether an engine was started doesn’t change our pricing, it changes our approach. LandCruisers can cost more due to fuel capacity, up to 140 litres or more with long-range tanks, assessed case by case.
VW Crafter Camper Wrong Fuel, Kalkallo — Not Started

The customer had the bonnet up when we arrived, expecting we’d need to work in the engine bay. Because the engine hadn’t been started, we didn’t need to go anywhere near it. We still run a computer check to confirm there are no operational issues, but the job stays contained to the fuel system. If we ever start a vehicle and something suggests it may have been run before we arrived without us being told, that’s when we’d move into the engine bay to check further.
Why We Check This Before Anything Else
Skipping this check isn’t a shortcut, it’s a risk. If wrong fuel has actually circulated through the lines and injectors but we only treat the tank, contaminated fuel is left sitting in parts of the system that weren’t addressed. That’s how a job that should be a clean fix turns into a comeback, or worse, engine damage further down the track. It’s also why we don’t take a customer’s word for it if something doesn’t line up. We assess it ourselves, every time.
What If You’re Not Sure Whether It Was Started?
Plenty of people aren’t sure, and that’s fine, it’s exactly why we check rather than just ask. Before we start any work, we run a computer diagnostic on the vehicle to read engine operation and flag anything inconsistent with what we’ve been told. If something suggests the engine was run when we were told it wasn’t, we adjust the job on the spot rather than guessing. This is part of why wrong fuel recovery isn’t something a general roadside or towing service can do properly. It takes the right diagnostic equipment and the experience to know what the readings actually mean.
Started Engine Wrong Fuel Questions Answered
Does a started engine cost more?
No, whether the engine was started doesn’t change our pricing. What changes is the approach we take on-site to do the job correctly. Separately, jobs where we supply fuel to get the vehicle running again do cost more, from $475, but that’s about fuel supplied, not whether the engine was started.
Please tell us if the engine was started. We ask because it changes how we need to approach your job, not what you’ll pay. Being upfront helps us prepare the right equipment and get it right the first time.
Can I just tell you if the engine was started?
Yes, and please do, it helps us prepare properly. We still run our own diagnostic check on every vehicle regardless of what we’re told, so there’s no downside to telling us everything you know.
What happens if the engine was started but I didn’t realise it?
This happens more often than people expect, especially with keyless start vehicles. Our diagnostic check is designed to catch this, and if anything looks inconsistent we treat the vehicle as started rather than risk leaving contaminated fuel in the system.
Is a started engine always more damaging?
Not necessarily, if you stop as soon as you notice something’s wrong. The real risk comes from continuing to drive, which is why we always recommend switching off and calling us immediately rather than trying to get to a service station or home first.
Whether your vehicle has been started matters more than the fact that wrong fuel is in the tank, and it’s one of the first things we assess on every call-out. If you’re not sure whether your car was started, don’t guess, call us on 1300 692 469 and we’ll help you work it out before we dispatch.
