General Wrong Fuel Questions
What should I do if I put the wrong fuel in my car in Melbourne?
Stop immediately and do not start or run your engine. Starting the vehicle circulates the contaminated fuel through your engine and fuel system which can cause serious and expensive damage. Stay with your car, turn on your hazard lights, and call Rapid Fuel Assist on 1300 692 469.
Can the wrong fuel damage my car's engine?
Yes — driving with the wrong fuel can cause serious damage to your fuel pump, injectors, and engine. However if you act quickly and don’t start the vehicle, Rapid Fuel Assist can drain and flush your fuel system safely with no lasting damage in most cases.
What happens if I accidentally start my engine after putting in the wrong fuel?
If you’ve started the engine after misfuelling stop it immediately. The longer it runs the more contaminated fuel circulates through your system causing damage. Call us straight away on 1300 692 469 — we can still help and will assess the damage and advise the best course of action.
Is wrong fuel rescue covered by insurance?
Some comprehensive car insurance policies cover misfuelling incidents. We recommend checking your policy or calling your insurer. We can provide a receipt and job details for any insurance claim you may need to make.
Our Service
How fast can Rapid Fuel Assist arrive for wrong fuel rescue in Melbourne?
We aim to reach you as quickly as possible across the Melbourne metro area, 7 days a week. As a fully mobile service we come directly to your location — whether you’re at a petrol station, roadside, at home, or in a car park.
How long does a wrong fuel rescue service take from start to finish?
Most wrong fuel rescue jobs are completed within 45 to 90 minutes from the time we arrive at your location. This includes draining the contaminated fuel, flushing the system and refuelling your vehicle so you can drive away. More complex cases may take longer but we’ll advise you upfront.
Can you fix a wrong fuel issue if I have already started the engine?
Yes — we can still help even if the engine has been started. However the sooner you stop and call us the better. Call us immediately on 1300 692 469 and we’ll assess the situation and advise the best course of action.
Do you carry replacement fuel after draining my tank?
Yes — where required we carry clean fuel to get your vehicle moving again after we have completed the drain and flush. This means in most cases you can drive away immediately after our service without needing to find a petrol station.
What types of vehicles do you service for wrong fuel rescue?
We service all petrol and diesel vehicles including cars, vans, utes, 4WDs, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles. Whether you’ve put petrol in a diesel car or diesel in a petrol car — our Melbourne team has the tools and expertise to handle it safely.
Pricing
How much does wrong fuel rescue cost in Melbourne?
We offer fixed, transparent pricing — you’ll know exactly what you pay before we start, with no hidden fees, no call out fees, and no card surcharges. No fix, no fee — if we can’t resolve your wrong fuel issue, you don’t pay.
How much does fuel tank drainage cost in Melbourne?
Every fuel drainage job is assessed individually as the cost depends on your vehicle type, fuel quantity and specific requirements. We provide a clear fixed all-inclusive price over the phone before we dispatch — no hidden fees, no card surcharges. No payment is taken until the job is 100% complete.
Petrol in Diesel
How much petrol does it take to damage a diesel engine?
Even as little as 2% petrol contamination can begin causing damage to modern high pressure common rail diesel engines — particularly to fuel pumps and injectors which rely on diesel for lubrication. Call us immediately on 1300 692 469 regardless of how much petrol you added.
Can I drive a short distance after putting petrol in my diesel car?
No — do not drive the vehicle under any circumstances. Even driving a short distance circulates the contaminated fuel through your entire fuel system causing damage that could have been avoided. Stay where you are and call us on 1300 692 469 — we come to you.
How long will the petrol in diesel car rescue service take?
Most petrol in diesel car jobs are completed within 30 to 45 minutes from when we arrive at your location. Times can vary depending on your specific vehicle requirements and fuel system complexity. We’ll give you a realistic time estimate when you call.
Will putting petrol in my diesel car void my warranty?
If we reach you before the engine has been started and drain the fuel completely you are at no risk of voiding your warranty — the fuel system is restored to its original condition. If the engine has been started the situation depends on your vehicle manufacturer and warranty terms. We can provide full documentation of our service for any warranty or insurance claim.
Diesel in Petrol
Is diesel in a petrol car as serious as petrol in a diesel car?
Both are serious but in different ways. Petrol in a diesel car damages the fuel pump and injectors rapidly. Diesel in a petrol car causes misfiring, smoke and can damage spark plugs and the catalytic converter if the engine is started. In both cases do not start the engine and call us immediately on 1300 692 469.
Can I tell just by looking if I've put diesel in my petrol car?
Not always. The easiest way to tell is by the fuel pump colour and nozzle size — diesel nozzles are larger and usually green or black. If you’re unsure don’t start the engine and call us on 1300 692 469 — we’ll help you identify the issue.
Will my catalytic converter be damaged if I started the engine?
If the engine was run briefly on diesel there is a risk of catalytic converter damage. The extent depends on how long it was run. Call us immediately — the sooner we drain the system the better the outcome. We’ll assess the situation on arrival and advise you honestly on any potential damage.
Fuel Tank Drainage
Can you drain fuel from any type of vehicle?
Yes — we drain fuel from all petrol and diesel vehicles including cars, utes, vans, 4WDs, SUVs and light commercial vehicles across Melbourne Metro. Call us on 1300 692 469 and we’ll confirm we can assist with your specific vehicle.
What happens to the fuel once it is drained from my tank?
All fuel waste removed from your vehicle is transported and disposed of responsibly in full compliance with EPA Victoria regulations. We are EPA permitted to handle and transport fuel waste.
Do you provide documentation for export or event compliance fuel drainage?
Yes — we can provide documentation of the fuel drainage service including the date, vehicle details and confirmation that the tank has been drained. This can be used for vehicle export requirements, event venue compliance or any other purpose where proof of fuel removal is needed.
Contaminated Fuel
How do I know if my fuel is contaminated?
Common signs include poor engine performance, difficulty starting, rough idling, loss of power, unusual smoke from the exhaust or engine warning lights. If you notice any of these symptoms after fuelling call us on 1300 692 469 and we’ll help diagnose the issue.
Can contaminated fuel damage my engine permanently?
It depends on the type of contamination and how long it has been in the system. Water contamination in a diesel engine can cause catastrophic injector failure if left untreated. In most cases where contamination is caught early a complete fuel drain and flush resolves the issue without lasting engine damage.
Can water get into my fuel tank while driving in heavy rain?
A properly sealed fuel tank should not allow water ingress during normal driving or rain. However damaged fuel caps, cracked tanks, faulty seals or condensation over time can allow water to enter. Water in a diesel fuel system particularly can cause rapid and expensive damage — call us immediately if you suspect contamination.
AdBlue Wrong Fuel
What is the difference between AdBlue in the diesel tank and diesel in the AdBlue tank?
Both are serious but cause different types of damage. AdBlue in the diesel fuel tank contaminates the entire fuel system causing crystallisation, corrosion and potentially catastrophic damage to the fuel pump and injectors if the engine is started. Diesel in the AdBlue tank contaminates the SCR emissions system. Both require immediate professional attention and neither vehicle should be started.
Will my vehicle be repairable after AdBlue contamination?
In most cases where the engine has not been started a complete drain and flush resolves the issue. However some vehicles may have residual fault codes requiring dealer software to clear limp mode. Where the engine was started there is a risk of damage to the high pressure fuel pump and injectors. We assess every job individually and advise you honestly on the expected outcome before we start.
Why do I need to replace my fuel filter after an AdBlue drain?
The fuel filter captures significant crystal deposits during an AdBlue contamination event. Even after a complete drain and flush these crystals remain in the filter and can re-enter the fuel system if not replaced. We strongly recommend replacing the fuel filter immediately after our service.
Can you fix AdBlue contamination at my location or do I need to go to a workshop?
Many AdBlue contamination jobs can be resolved in a mobile setting — particularly where the engine has not been started. However some vehicles have complex fuel systems where adequate flushing is difficult roadside. We will always advise you during quoting and be upfront about what we can and cannot achieve at your location.
