What to Do Right Now If You’re Misfiring on the Freeway
Pull over as soon as it can be done safely. That is the only priority.
Do not keep driving in search of a more convenient exit or a better place to stop. Every kilometre you continue puts more contaminated fuel through the engine and increases the risk of a more serious failure.
Some Melbourne freeways, including certain sections of toll roads, do not have an emergency stopping lane. If that is the case and it is reasonably practicable, take the very next exit and stop as soon as you are off the freeway.

The chance of something going wrong on the shoulder of a freeway may be low, but the consequence of it is not. We will not place our team or the customer at risk of a fatality for the sake of getting the job done on the spot.
Our standard approach is to recommend a tow to the nearest petrol station with enough space to work comfortably, the customer’s home, or any side road or parking area safely off the freeway. Any major road or freeway attendance also requires a traffic authority on site — not necessarily VicRoads specifically, but some form of recognised traffic control to safely manage the area.

We were called to assist with a fuel spill from a truck in Malvern. On arrival, Fire Rescue Victoria and the VicRoads Incident Response Team were already on site. They had set up a full traffic diversion, blocked off an entire lane around the spill, and reduced the speed limit to 40km/h through the area.

The driver had misfuelled at a petrol station before getting onto the Monash freeway. Just after the Chadstone and Warrigal Road intersection, the Triton started losing power, the engine began jerking, and he had to stop.
Because of the location, the vehicle had to be towed off the freeway to a safe spot. The tow truck collected the ute first, then had to reposition to recover the trailer separately — not a simple operation. A nearby petrol station was ruled out because of the trailer, so a quiet back road in Malvern became the work location.
We met the vehicle at the drop-off point, completed a full drain, flush, and clean-out of the fuel system, and supplied a jerry can of diesel to re-prime and start the engine. After checks, everything was running normally and the customer was back on the road.
