When the Call Comes From 300km Away
Most people picture a wrong fuel emergency happening in a driveway or at the local servo. This one started with a call from a truck stranded on the Murray Valley Highway, just outside Barnawartha North, close to the Victoria–New South Wales border.
DAISHU Furniture is an interstate removalist with more than ten years running the Melbourne–Sydney and Melbourne–Adelaide routes. Their 2019 Isuzu NNR 45-150 was loaded with a family’s belongings, partway through a Melbourne to Sydney delivery, when AdBlue was accidentally added to the diesel tank instead of the AdBlue reservoir. The engine was started, the truck began to shudder, and the driver switched it off immediately, doing exactly the right thing in a stressful moment.
The truck was still around 300km short of Sydney. A family was waiting on their delivery. And because the mistake came down to driver error, it wasn’t covered by insurance.
The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong
Before calling us, DAISHU had already been quoted more than $10,000 for local repairs, with towing the truck back to Melbourne priced at close to another $2,000 on top. For a business running tight delivery schedules and other jobs already booked from Sydney back to Melbourne, that kind of delay wasn’t just expensive, it risked the booking, the customer’s trust, and every other job stacked up behind it.
Why the Job Was Priced the Way It Was
We quoted $1,915 including GST for this job, and it’s worth explaining exactly what that figure covers, because a job like this isn’t a quick call-out.
Barnawartha North is roughly 306km from Melbourne CBD, a 3 hour 12 minute drive each way, close to 6.5 hours of driving alone including toll roads. On top of that, the job itself took around 2.5 hours on-site, bringing the total time commitment to roughly 9 hours from leaving Melbourne to heading back. In reality we came from Dandenong on that day to Barnawartha.
That on-site time covered full fuel extraction, flushing the tank, fuel lines, filter and other fuel system components six separate times to make sure no contamination remained, bleeding the fuel system, supplying fresh diesel, correctly containing and disposing of the contaminated fuel in line with EPA requirements, and running a full diagnostic and engine check before signing off. A 9km test drive was carried out afterwards to confirm everything was operating normally before the truck went back on the road.
Every part of that price reflects nearly a full working day spent solving the problem properly, not a call-out fee for showing up. Compared to a $10,000 repair quote and a $2,000 tow, it’s easy to see why DAISHU didn’t hesitate once the details were confirmed.
Getting the Reassurance Needed to Say Yes
Before agreeing to go ahead, DAISHU wanted a few things confirmed in writing, given how much was riding on the outcome. They asked whether the fuel extraction and flush would be expected to restore the truck to normal, safe operating condition, what warranty applied if the same symptoms returned, and what would happen if the truck couldn’t be fully restored.
