This is one of the most common calls we get.
Either the driver had no idea they put the wrong fuel in, or they knew and quietly hoped they had gotten away with it. In both cases the result is the same — the car drove home without any obvious drama and the misfuel went unnoticed until the next morning.
The reason it ran at all comes down to what is sitting in your fuel lines before the pump draws from the tank. In most vehicles the fuel lines, filter housing, and high pressure components hold between one and three litres of diesel before the contaminated fuel from the tank starts working through the system. That buffer buys you distance — sometimes enough to get home.
Why Your Wrong Fuel Car Won’t Start the Next Morning
Diesel engines do not use a spark plug. They ignite fuel through compression alone — the air in the cylinder gets compressed so tightly it generates enough heat to ignite diesel on contact.
Petrol does not behave the same way under compression, particularly when cold.
While you were driving home, the engine was at full operating temperature. Hot enough that the contaminated mix could still fire, even if not the way it was designed to. What is actually happening during that drive is not clean combustion — preignition and detonation are likely occurring, which puts real stress on cylinder walls, pistons, rings, and valves.
Once you parked and the engine went cold overnight, that margin disappeared completely. A cold diesel engine on petrol-contaminated fuel has no realistic path to ignition. That is why the next morning it either would not start at all, or made a lot of noise trying.

This job is a good example of how this plays out in practice.
The driver was in a loan vehicle while his own car was being repaired. Not his usual fuel type, not a pump layout he was familiar with. He filled it with petrol, got in, and drove home without noticing anything wrong.
The next morning the HiAce would not start and was making significant noise on the attempt. He retraced his steps, worked out what had happened, and called us.
We attended, completed a full drain and flush of the fuel system, and the engine started. After a few checks it was back to normal operation. The loan car was returned without further issue.

Is the Car Harder to Fix After Sitting Overnight?

Complete part failure from a single misfuel incident is uncommon, especially in newer vehicles. Modern engines are sensitive to wrong fuel but they do not tend to fail instantly or all at once.
Individual injectors can show signs of wear and may need attention down the track, but a full set failing simultaneously is very unlikely.
