Wrong fuel in a rental car in Australia is one of the most stressful misfuelling situations we attend — and one of the most common. The driver is unfamiliar with the vehicle, often unfamiliar with Australian fuel labelling, sometimes visiting from overseas, and almost always working against the clock on a holiday or a work schedule that has no room for a breakdown. If you have just put the wrong fuel in a rental car, here is exactly what to do.
Why Rental Cars Get Misfuelled More Than Any Other Vehicle
Rental vehicles are misfuelled at a disproportionately high rate compared to privately owned cars. The reasons are straightforward — the driver did not choose the vehicle, did not read the manual, and may have never fuelled it before. Visitors from overseas face an additional layer of unfamiliarity with Australian bowser labelling, which uses different colour coding and terminology to what they may be used to at home. In some cases drivers have never had to fill a vehicle themselves at all.
Add to that the distraction of being on holiday, the pressure of a tight itinerary, or the stress of an unfamiliar road environment — and the conditions for a misfuelling mistake are set before the driver even pulls into the servo.
Australian drivers sharing their own experiences confirm the same pattern — rental cars and hire vehicles feature heavily in wrong fuel incidents across the country.
Two Jobs That Show How Different the Outcomes Can Be
French Father and Son — HiAce Campervan, Mornington Peninsula
A French father and son had just collected their hired HiAce campervan that afternoon when they stopped at a BP on the Mornington Peninsula to fill up. Diesel went into a petrol engine. They drove off the pump and within a very short distance the engine began running poorly — diesel in a petrol vehicle breaks down engine function quickly. They pulled over, contacted the rental company, and we were called out to attend.
Because they had only driven a very short distance before stopping, the contamination had not circulated far through the system. We completed the drain and flush on the spot and had the campervan running again before they lost significant time on their trip. The job was clean, the documentation was provided to the rental company, and the father and son were back on the road the same evening.
One more detail worth noting — the father showed us his travel insurance PDS on the day. It contained a specific inclusion of $750 cover for misfuelling incidents. It is the only time we have seen this written so explicitly into a travel insurance policy, but it speaks to how commonly this happens to international visitors that insurers are now accounting for it.
Chinese Couple — Hyundai Santa Fe, Port Campbell, Great Ocean Road
This job is one of the more memorable ones we have attended. A Chinese couple visiting Australia were driving the Great Ocean Road in a petrol variant Hyundai Santa Fe when they filled with diesel at Port Campbell — 3.5 hours from Melbourne, on a Friday evening, with no local mechanics, no local services, and a 10 day trip planned out ahead of them.
The options on the table were not great. A tow truck back to Melbourne would have meant the cost of the tow, the cost of a replacement hire car, and the cost of workshop repairs in Melbourne — not to mention losing at least a full day of a short trip that had been carefully planned. None of that was a reasonable outcome for a misfuelling mistake that could be resolved on the spot.
We negotiated a fair deal, drove out to Port Campbell, and repaired the vehicle roadside. The car had been driven a short distance before the mistake was identified — which adds a layer of complexity — but we completed the full drain, flush and remobilisation on the spot. The couple continued their Great Ocean Road trip the same night.
The cost of our service was significantly less than the alternative. And they kept their holiday.

Wrong Fuel in a Rental Car — Who Actually Pays?
In most cases we deal directly with the driver — the renter. This is usually the person who calls us, and it is often the faster and cheaper path anyway.
Here is why going direct to us rather than through the rental company can save you money: rental companies will arrange the repair on your behalf, but they will add a surcharge — typically around 30% — for administrative handling. Our standard fee covers everything: full fuel extraction, EPA Victoria compliant waste disposal with tracking documentation, one jerry can of fresh fuel, engine remobilisation, and testing before handover. The rental company adds nothing to that process except cost.
In the two jobs mentioned above — Port Campbell and Mornington Peninsula — both drivers paid us directly even though in each case the rental company helped locate us. They saved money and we got the job done faster without a layer of administration in the middle.
What about insurance? We do not deal directly with insurance providers in the standard sense — we complete the job, you pay us, and you submit to your insurer if you have cover. Whether your travel insurance or rental excess waiver covers misfuelling depends entirely on your policy. Most standard rental insurance and roadside assistance programs treat wrong fuel as driver error and do not cover it. Check your PDS specifically for misfuelling or wrong fuel inclusions before assuming you are covered.
We have also worked directly with fleet insurance providers who manage roadside assistance across a rental fleet — flat tyres, dead batteries, and misfuelling all handled under the same provider. In those cases we deal with the insurer directly as the authorised service.
Does the Rental Company Need to Be Notified Before We Fix It?
Technically no — we can attend, drain, and have the vehicle running again without prior notification to the rental company. But we always recommend the rental company be informed, and here is why it matters for you as the renter.
We document everything. Every job we attend includes a full record of the process, the condition of the vehicle on arrival, the fuel contamination assessment, the drain and flush procedure, and the engine function results after remobilisation. We provide a fully itemised invoice and job documentation to the customer.
That documentation is your protection. If the rental company later claims there is an issue with the vehicle related to the fuel system, you have a professional record showing the vehicle was correctly repaired and in good running condition when it left our care. Hand that documentation to the rental company at the end of your hire. It closes the loop on any future dispute and, frankly, it is a better outcome for everyone.
The rental company should also simply be aware that their vehicle received service — that is a basic obligation as the hirer regardless of who arranged or paid for the repair.
The Most Common Rental Vehicles We See Misfuelled
Across Melbourne and regional Victoria we attend wrong fuel jobs on rental vehicles regularly. The most common include Kia Carnivals, which are extremely popular for both Uber drivers and family holidays, the Hyundai Staria, and a wide range of standard fleet sedans and SUVs. We also attend a significant number of rental utes and vans — vehicles hired for courier work, moving house, or trade work — where the driver is often a petrol car owner who has never fuelled a diesel ute before.
If you have hired any of these vehicles and put in the wrong fuel — call us directly on 1300 692 469.
The Single Most Important Thing to Do Right Now
If you have just misfuelled a rental car and have not started the engine — do not start it. Stay with the vehicle. Call Rapid Fuel Assist on 1300 692 469.
In every case where the engine has not been started, we can drain and flush the system completely with zero lasting damage to the vehicle. The rental company will never know the difference on a correctly repaired car — and with our documentation they will have full transparency either way.
If you have already started the engine or driven the car, stop as soon as it is safe to do so and call us immediately. The longer the contaminated fuel circulates through the system the closer the vehicle moves toward component damage. We have attended cars that have been driven and resolved them without parts replacement — but every kilometre counts.
Do not try to siphon or drain the fuel yourself. Even Shell’s own safety guidance warns against attempting to remove contaminated fuel without the right equipment — the risks extend well beyond the fuel system.
We Cover All of Melbourne and Can Travel Regional Victoria
Whether you are at a servo in Melbourne Metro or stranded on the Great Ocean Road, we can help. We attend across Melbourne Metro 7 days a week and have travelled regional Victoria for jobs where the situation warrants it — as the Port Campbell job shows.
Call us first. We will give you a clear timeframe, a fixed price, and honest advice on your next steps — including what to say to the rental company and what documentation you will need.
Regional Jobs are scheduled case by case and are not always immediately available, but we will help where we can.
